The Ministry of industry and transport of the Udmurt Republic has been instructed to work out a plan of the Republic's target program "Development
of textile and light industry of the Udmurt Republic for 2004-2010".
According to the press service of the president and the government in Udmurtia it has become necessary first of all as a results of considerable
reduction of the industry production over the last decade. Negative tendencies developed mainly due to the intervention of cheap fashionable garments
of inferior quality, brought into RF territory by individual "suitcase traders". Old positions in manufacturing children woven garments,
footwear, chrome leather, felt boots have been lost. The share of light industry production within total volume of goods produced in the republic
has reduced fivefold. Number of people engaged in the industry has reduced more than 2.5 times. The prospects for the development of textile and
light industry consist in reconstruction and technical re-equipment of the industry enterprises, in producing goods which will meet all modern
requirements, in training personnel and other measures. One hundred seventy thousand rubles has been allocated to develop this program. The draft
is to be submitted for the government by the end of the year.
