In Yamal the herd of domesticated reindeer is the biggest in the world. In 2003 the herd number of domesticated reindeer reached 600 thousand heads there (for comparison: in Taimyr the population of reindeer is more than 1 million heads, but the number of domesticated animals at seven working reindeer farms is less than 40 thousand heads). In Yamalo-Nenets autonomous region the traditional way of life and household of native population is preserved. Owing to the reasonable social and economic policy of the district administration reindeer breeding has occupied its own niche in the economy of the region. A number of reindeer breeding farms have been reorganized into municipal enterprises, farms and communities. Most of the enterprises have a complete production cycle from growing a reindeer to the deep processing of the production. The major big enterprises are ZAO Baidaratsky (Priuralski district), MUP Yarsalinsky (Yamal district), equipped with modern slaughter and refrigerator complexes, shops of deep reindeer meat processing, for producing delicacies from reindeer meat, shops on processing primordium antlers of reindeer and other endocrine and ferment raw materials. Permanent work is carried out on improving production base of processing reindeer hides and meat.
