Russian raw hides and finished leather market report. Moscow 1st November 2001

Hard times for Russian traders. Prices dropped considerably (especially those of lawer grades raw material). Export of raw hides remains very law. Mainly calves and kips are exported. Local prices for Russian raw hides are higher than that of Europe (taking into account export duty and shipment costs). Export of wet-blue and crust can not make up for losses which most of traders face. There is an unconfirmed information about forthcoming reduction of export duty for wet-salted hides. Meantime many Russian tanners still are not ready to reduce finished leathers' prices accordingly, waiting for further developments in the raw materials' market.
