Russian Leather and footwear industries in 2002-2004
Finished leather production in Russia grows continuousely since 1998. Production of chrome-tanned leathers in 2002 as compared with 1998 amounted
to 302% (202% growth), production of Juft leathers - 206% (106% growth), production of heavy leathers - 180% (80% growth). In 2003 production
of chrome-tanned leathers amounted to 1421 million sq. dm (20.8% growth as compared with the year 2002), output of Juft leathers - 118 million
sq. dm (16.8% growth), output of heavy leathers - 67.7 million sq. dm (8.3% decrease). Production of Juft and chrome-tanned leathers has been
growing all these years. Meantime, after a couple of years of growth, we saw a considerable decrease in heavy leathers production in 2002-2003
(the term "heavy leathers" includes sole leathers, most of harness and saddlery leathers and some types of technical (industrial) leathers).
In 2 years (2002-2003) decrease in heavy leathers production amounted to 34.8%. Many local footwear producers chose to use cheaper materials (reconstituted
leathers and artificial materials) instead of heavy leathers for insole base production. Latest statistics from the Goskomstat of RF on the 1st
quarter of 2004 provide some hope in revival of heavy leathers production in 2004. In the 1st quarter of 2004 as compared with the respective
period of the previous year production of heavy leathers has grown by 31.5%, production of chrome-tanned leathers - by 19.35%, production of Juft
leathers - by 50.96%.

Two biggest tanneries "Russkaya Kozha and Ostashkovskiy tannery produced over 50% of whole Russian output of chrome-tanned leathers. Artex,
Safyan and Spasskiy tanneries also achieved good growth rates. Some tanneries completely ceased chrome-tanned leathers production, some were closed,
and others resumed production.

Two biggest Russian producers (Shevro and Ribinsk tanneries) produced about 70% of whole Russian output of heavy leathers. Shevro, being an unsurpassed
leader in high quality heavy leathers segment, during only a few years have also considerably increased production volume becoming one of the
biggest Russian producers of heavy leathers. We suppose that management team appointed by new owners of the tannery in 1999 has heavily contributed
in company's success.
Also Taganrog, Sterlitamak and Chromtan tanneries were quite successful achieving outstanding growth rates.
